Derashos haRan – Derashah #3, Chaburah #1

Derashos haRan – Derashah #3, Chaburah #1

We started the Ran’s third derashah. In this derashah, the Ran discusses Moshe, Aharon, the nature of nevu’ah, Moshe’sspecial kind of nevu’ah,, the urim vetumim, and the first mitzvos given to the ewish People — counting months from Nissan and of Pesach.

The Ran raises the distinction between “natural” prophecy and Moshe’s miraculous prophecy. From there we detoured into a general machloqes rishonim about whether nevu’ah is the reception of a message from Hashem, or the awareness of higher realities. Only the latter could be “natural”. A message from Hashem by definition requires Divine Intervention. For another formulation of the ideas in the detour, see the title post of the Aspaqlaria blog: https://aspaqlaria.aishdas.org/2004/11/17/aspaqlaria/

The text is available with my margin notes at https://www.aishdas.org/kloiz/Derashos-haRan-derashah-3.pdf
Or on Sefaria, beginning at https://www.sefaria.org/Derashot_HaRan.3.1

Derashos haRan is an explanation of the fundamentals of the Torah as explicated from texts in the Chumash. The second derashah addresses parashah Toledos — Yaaqov, Eisav / Edom, antisemitism, and the natures of both prophecy and the future.
